  • Jean-Louis Cohen, architect and historian, and Monique Eleb, psychologist and sociologist, take us on an architectural walk in inner Paris and its close suburbs. From the end of the 19th century, where technical discoveries made it possible for us to free ourselves from conventions and put social and artistic theories into practice, to the current generation which observes and analyzes urban traditions, we follow the metamorphoses of architecture, the transformations of the identity of a relatively small and dense city, part of an agglomeration of more than ten million inhabitants. Thirty-three buildings, public buildings and homes, photographed by Antonio Martinelli, were chosen from the multitude of achievements which marked the 20th century, based on their place in the urban space and the role they played in the transformation of lifestyles. Through their correspondence, Jean-Louis Cohen and Monique Eleb reveal a surprising unity of culture tending towards the ideal of a rational and readable architecture.
