  • Luc Lanel (1893-1965) and his wife Marjolaine (1897-1976) occupy a unique place in the decorative arts of the first half of the 20th century. Hired in 1920 at Christofle, Luc Lanel designed pieces which were assimilated into Art Deco, developing remarkable lines of brassware and an influential transatlantic style in goldsmithing. At the same time, the couple created ceramics which enjoyed some success, with vases, bowls and lighting often signed “La Marjolaine”. When Luc Lanel left Christofle in 1946, the couple began a joint career as ceramists with 40s-style pieces. Collaborating with the great decorators Jules Leleu, Jean-Charles Moreux and André Devèche, they worked from their Neuilly studio, the one turning, the other enameling, to make vases and urns, but also architectural decorations for churches, houses, for large ocean liners and even for the Élysée. The decorative opulence, grace and fantasy of these works which play on the contrast of smooth and relief, raw earth and enamel, fully justify their passage to posterity.
