Published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation bringing together the most significant works of Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941) and the artists who worked with him, this work evokes the decorator's links with the intellectual elite of the interwar period, Louis Aragon, René Crevel, Drieu La Rochelle, François Mauriac, or the Noailles. Retracing the journey of this mythical figure of the decorative arts, he compares his style, described as “poor luxury”, with the emerging modern movement, and reveals its surrealist dimension with regard to his collaborations with Salvador Dalí, Emilio Terry, Christian Bérard and especially Alberto Giacometti.
