  • On the evening of June 19, 1929, the Bal des Matières given in Paris by the patrons Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles in their private mansion, Place des États-Unis, appeared as a manifesto which brought together all the artistic antagonisms and the different currents of thought. This total spectacle where everyone was an actor imposed only one constraint: clothes made with unusual materials. The guests arrived draped in pebble costumes, straw dresses, tailcoats made from book covers…

On this occasion, the couple commissioned original works from several artists or musicians in order to punctuate the evening. Among these was Faust magicien, painted by Jean Hugo on thirty-one glass plates projected by a magic lantern, accompanied by a libretto by Louis Laloy and a score by George Auric. The whole thing disappeared after this single projection, before Stéphane Boudin-Lestienne and Alexandre Mare rediscovered the plates, eighty years later, and included them in the collection of the Villa Noailles, in Hyères. In an illustrated essay, they return to the genesis of this ephemeral work, reproduced here in its entirety.

In 2015, as part of the Fontainebleau Art History Festival, the INHA commissioned a new libretto from Noëlle Renaude, as well as a musical creation from Ignacio Plaza Ponce, which collectively brought Faust magicien back to life.

Text by Stéphane Boudin-Lestienne and Alexandre Mare, libretto by Noëlle Renaude and interview with Florence Buttay.
