From the mid-1960s, Jean Garçon (1928-2011) intuitively followed the movements of his time and the developments in contemporary creation of the Trente Glorieuses – in steel furniture, graphics and a series of unique card games, and also in jewelry and everyday plastic objects.
At l’école de Paul Colin, he acquired a sense of impeccable execution of the line, which would become his Ariadne's thread: the aerial edge of a steel blade, a rigorous line with the playful geometry of an ace of spades or a queen of hearts. Or even “body jewelry”, such as a fine gold or silver chain falling from the base of the neck to the navel, not to mention the organic shapes that thermoformed plastic makes possible.
His taste, his training and his affinities naturally pushed Jean Garçon towards minimalism. Standing in front of his work, we cannot help but think of one of those superb Greek maxims which adorns the pediment of the temple of Apollo at Delphi: “Nothing too much”.
