  • For Germaine Richier (1902-1959), sculpture is the meeting of an instinctive feeling and an eminently thought out and constructed form. “All my sculptures“, she says, “start from an organic truth. Imagination needs a start. We can thus emerge into poetry.“ The specificity of her work also lies in the reading given to it by literary criticism. This richly detailed study is based on unpublished texts and correspondence bringing together the names of Ponge, Paulhan, Limbour, Pieyre de Mandiargues and Solier. The first study devoted to Richier, a major artist whose career lasted just over twenty-five years, from 1934 to 1959, this work fills a gap in the field of art history and especially 20th century sculpture. Closer to an essay than a traditional monograph, it favors the study of certain works, adopting the option of showing the singularity of a visual arts language which has established both thematic and formal benchmarks.
