Valentin Fabre and Jean Perrottet are two architects inhabited by the theater. From their meeting at the beginning of the 1960s, within the Atelier d'urbanisme et d'architecture (AUA), with René Allio, scenographer and decorator who collaborated for a long time with Roger Planchon, they participated in a study on the houses of the André Malraux culture. Their creations reflect developments in theatrical practice, in a conceptual approach which favors the functionality of a venue placed at the service of artistic creation, while optimizing the conditions for welcoming the widest possible audience. Valentin Fabre and Jean Perrottet have built or rehabilitated more than twenty theaters. Nearly 300 illustrations, plans, sketches and photographs illustrate their major achievements: Théâtre de la Ville, Théâtre des Gémeaux in Sceaux, Théâtre national de Chaillot, MC 93 Bobigny, Théâtre national de la Colline, Théâtre d’Angoulême, opera de Rennes… So many precious testimonies on stage and dramaturgical life in France for almost fifty years.
“We could have feared a work that was too technical, but this is not the case. Rich in photos, plans and sketches, it is simply fascinating.“
A.C., Le Journal du Dimanche, April 30, 2006
“Here is a work which is as much about the history of the art of theater as it is about architecture. Or who, more precisely, knows how to confuse these disciplines.“
