A great scholar, professor of art history at the Sorbonne and at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, Bruno Foucart takes a fresh look at the 19^th century. The first volume of this book dedicated to him brings together some of his writings, through which we discover the richness and the great figures of an architectural heritage that the following century rejected, of which he is the one of the main actors – and how this heritage later came to be valued once more. Bruno Foucart continues this reflection on the 20^th century by engaging us in a plural reading which does not lock itself into a reductive definition, but allows us to judge the multiplicity of its artistic movements and the aesthetic battles that made the richness of a pivotal era just as important as the one that preceded it. A second volume brings together the writings of his colleagues, academics and curators, on the subjects that Bruno Foucart defended with passion and on the struggles he led to restore culture, the French spirit, its colors and its life.
