  • Freed from modernist rigors, design invades our worlds with a multiplicity of shapes and colors. It is nourished by art, architecture and cinema, and is part of the way society asks questions, giving meaning to objects that past centuries have emptied of their emotional charge, restricted to defined roles – utilitarian, decorative or representative – confined, from the kitchen to the living room, to agreed locations. Resuming the dimension they have in the novels we loved, seats, lamps, bookcases, bottles and cutlery escape today to become the elements of a dream image of ourselves, allowing us to write the story that we give to others to read.

A writer and journalist in the field of design and architecture, Esther Henwood highlights the obvious relationship that exists between literature and design, and thus breaks down one of the last barriers between artistic disciplines. With simple questions that allow the answers to develop freely, she questions forty contemporary designers with very different aesthetic and formal choices, from Hella Jongerius to Christophe Pillet, from Matali Crasset to Guillaume Bardet... They tell us about the writers they love, about books that made an impression on them, and about creations inspired by the poetry of Francis Ponge, a musical silence by Duras, an acidic reply by Houellebecq, the chic laser-cut costumes of Patrick Bateman, the sulphurous hero of Bret Easton Ellis, or Jim Harrison's lyrical descriptions of Montana. And we see the object they imagined, the armchair in which Fitzgerald could have sat, the oversized chaise longue invented by Élizabeth Garouste for Modiano. A double relationship which reveals their intimate worlds. Above all, this book makes us want to read or reread and makes us look differently at the objects around us, perhaps invent a story for them, and question their image and ours.
