This third volume of the complete works (1956-1968) presents the work of Charlotte Perriand at the heart of Les Trente Glorieuses, a period during which her status as an international creator was confirmed.
From 1956, Charlotte Perriand developed a sustained collaboration with the Steph Simon gallery, which notably produced her Nuage book shelves. She strengthened her links with Air France, developed agencies in Europe, Japan and Brazil and designed the first open-plan work spaces.
In Geneva, she devoted more than ten years to the renovation of the immense Palace of Nations, headquarters of the UN in Europe, to make it a modern tool serving thousands of diplomats and NGOs.
The book also illustrates her “art of living” through creations such as the residence of the Japanese ambassador in Paris, the Sahara house, her chalet in Méribel, her apartment in Rio de Janeiro, or even the interior design of the Brazilian pavilion at the Cité Universitaire in Paris, with Le Corbusier.
Another of Charlotte Perriand's favourite countries after Japan, Brazil, to which she travelled regularly from 1959 to 1970, was an important part of her world. There, she befriended Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and the great figures of the progressive cultural scene. In 1963, she began a mission to develop the craft industry in Nordeste, which was interrupted by the military coup. Nearly 800 documents, most of them unpublished, retrace a dozen years of creation in the fields of furniture, design and architecture by this pioneer of design, and they prefigure her work for the Arcs resort in Savoie in the 70s and 80s.

JACQUES BARSAC L’auteur
Jacques Barsac est réalisateur d’une quarantaine de documentaires sur l’art et sur l’histoire, des films qui ont obtenu une vingtaine de prix dans des festivals internationaux : Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Jean Cocteau, Le Roman du visage, Winston Churchill, L’An mil, Clovis, L’Aigle et le Sphinx… Il a reçu la médaille d’argent des publications de l’Académie d’architecture et le trophée de la promotion de l’architecture du ministère de l’Équipement pour le film Le Corbusier.
Il a rencontré Charlotte Perriand en 1981 et l’a accompagnée dans l’écriture de son livre autobiographique Une vie de création, paru aux Éditions Odile Jacob en 1998.
Depuis 2002, il consacre son activité à l’oeuvre de Charlotte Perriand. Auteur de six ouvrages de référence, Charlotte Perriand, un art d’habiter, Éditions Norma, 2005, Charlotte Perriand et le Japon, Éditions Norma, 2008, Charlotte Perriand et la Photographie, Éditions 5 Continents, 2011, Charlotte Perriand. L’oeuvre complète, volumes 1 et 2, Éditions Norma, 2015.
Conseiller scientifique des rétrospectives Charlotte Perriand depuis 2005, il a assuré le commissariat des expositions « Charlotte Perriand et la Photographie », Petit Palais, Paris, 2011, et « Charlotte Perriand et le Japon », musée d’Art moderne, Saint-Étienne, 2013, aux côtés de Pernette Perriand-Barsac.
Barry Bergdoll est professeur d’histoire de l’art à la Columbia University, chaire Meyer Schapiro, et conservateur au Museum of Modern Art à New York.
Spécialiste de l’histoire de l’architecture moderne, il a été le commissaire de nombreuses expositions, dont « Mies in Berlin » (2001), « Bauhaus 1919-1933 : Workshops for Modernity » (2009-2010), « Labrouste : la structure mise en lumière » (2013), « Frank Lloyd Wright and the City : Density vs. Dispersal » (2014) et « Latin America in Construction : Architecture 1955-1980 » (2015).
Il est notamment auteur ou coauteur de Marcel Breuer : Building Global Institutions (2017), La Structure mise en lumière. Henri Labrouste (1801-1875) (2012), Fragments : Architecture and the Unfinished (2006), European Architecture 1750-1890 (2000) et Léon Vaudoyer : Historicism in the Age of Industry (1994).
