  • Inaugurated in the large village hall of the Trocadéro Palace on November 11, 1920, the anniversary of the Armistice, the first popular national theater was transferred in 1937 to the new building built by Carlu. Known worldwide under the abbreviation TNP, this place, which was intended to allow great fraternal ideas to be expressed, has been called the Théâtre National de Chaillot since 1975. From Firmin Gémier to Jérôme Savary via Abram, Aldebert, Vilar, Wilson, Lang, André Périnetti and Vitez, its successive directors have left their mark on it. From 1951 to 1963, under the direction of Jean Vilar, five million spectators attended more than 3,300 performances. Its revolutionary productions of Brecht and Büchner were especially memorable. Throughout a history linked to the evolution of generous utopias, from Vilar's desire "to awaken, through great theatrical works, the understanding of beings and things in this world" to "elite theater for all" by Vitez, Chaillot remained faithful to its mission of national and popular theater.
