A seaside town is inconceivable without a casino. In 1928, the municipality of Biarritz ordered a casino from the Biarritz architect André Laulhé on the site of the one built at the beginning of the century by Henri Chevalier, which no longer met the requirements of the cosmopolitan society of the 1930s. Sixty years later, this Art Deco monument, attacked by the sea air, was in poor condition. A debate began on the usefulness of rehabilitating it. A central part of the connection between the Grande Plage and the city, its restoration was desired by the population, and its rehabilitation was entrusted to the architect François Lombard. Symbolic of a change in mentalities, this decision is part of a real consideration of the importance of an architectural heritage, but also of the desire to preserve a place of memory, witness to the social and cultural life of the Roaring Twenties of which this book retraces some legendary moments: the banks of the financier Alexandre Stavisky, parties and plays staged by the Marquis d'Arcangues, Festival of the Maudit film organized by Cocteau...
