  • The passages and galleries of Prague are distinguished by their typology and their history from those found in France, England or Italy. Much older or more recent, intimately linked to the fabric of the city, to its development over the centuries, they do not correspond to a precise urban planning period. This work presents a study of their role in historical, architectural and urban planning, from the medieval labyrinth and the intertwining of the streets of the Renaissance and Baroque districts to the discovery of the Méstské Palacé, galleries with often daring architecture – testimonies of the modern, Art Deco or rondocubist styles – which were created between 1907 and 1935 mainly along Wenceslas Square and Na Prikope Avenue. Very popular with Prague residents, the theaters, cinemas and performance halls they house have constituted an inseparable element of the socio-cultural life of the city. Abandoned from the 1950s, with democracy restored they regained their relevance and their use.
