  • In December 1999, for the first time, the Museum of Decorative Arts presented the collection left by Jean Royère upon his final departure for the United States. This work allows you to discover one of the most important legacies made by a 20th century creator: drawn and gouache projects, unpublished Ektachrome revealing his palette of colors, period photos of the decor of consulates, palaces or private homes, and also the remarkable articles he published. We discover the openness of an artist who for a long time was primarily noted for his astonishing decorative fantasy, but who, with an ornamental register without gratuitousness, set the tone of the period. Following the example of Frank Lloyd Wright, in 1937 he put the fireplace back at the center of domestic life. At the time of the reconstruction, he declared: "The public should know that the beautiful does not cost more than the ugly", and revealed to a France still centered on its glorious decorative past the Scandinavian and Italian modernities which would soon revolutionize our interiors.
