  • From the Jacquemin courthouse in 1843 to the Center for Contemporary Creation Olivier-Debré d'Aires Mateus in 2016, the city of Tours has continued to reinvent itself. Retracing the history of Touraine architecture and town planning from the Revolution to the present day, this work presents the changes in the city and its expansion through its emblematic constructions such as the Prébendes district and its garden (1871), the Grand Théâtre of Rohard and Hardion (1867-1889), the town hall of Laloux (1904), the chapel of the Minor Brothers of Perret (1930), the Mame printing works of Zehrfuss and Prouvé (1953), the Reconstruction carried out by Dorian and Patout from 1945, the large ensembles of Les Trente Glorieuses, and more recently the achievements of Jean Nouvel (1993) and Nicolas Michelin (2003) or the interventions of Daniel Buren which accompanied the birth of the tramway (2013). It analyzes the ideas and actions of the people who shaped Tours and participated in its metamorphosis, in particular its mayors Auguste Walvein, Ernest Mame, Jean Royer and Jean Germain.

Combining unpublished documents and contemporary shots, this reference book, the culmination of a major research project, which highlights the work of artists such as Jean-Frédéric Wielhorski or Pierre Chareau, illustrates the creative evolution which characterizes the modernity of Tours.
