Intensive Beirut

"Building in Lebanon is my way of taking a stand against the war." This sentence from the Franco-Lebanese architect Youssef Tohme is the key to entering Intensive Beirut. This illustrated essay combines urban reflections on the Lebanese capital with the experiences of this project manager committed to reopening the debate on architecture in his country. In Beirut, where any situation is never more than a provisional state, the analysis of space is fundamental.

Youssef Tohme sees his discipline as a critical and political tool. He never approaches it as a formal or stylistic universe but as the possibility of questioning the world, reflecting on the conditions of the city.

Deeply linked to his experience, his positions on emptiness, exchange and dreams have a particular resonance in a country where the culture of fragments and superposition is pushed to the extreme.

The first part of the book presents the ideas of Youssef Tohme in relation to 25 photos by Ziad Antar. Equipped with a Holga and a Rollefleix, the Lebanese artist captured four of the architect's major achievements – Saint-Joseph University in Beirut (designed with 109 architects), Villa T and Villa M in Kornet Chehouane, the SC villa in Akoura – with regard to the city of Beirut and what extends beyond it. The second part is produced by Karine Dana. The author puts Youssef Tohme in conversation with important figures from the Lebanese cultural scene, such as the architect Tony Chakar, the artist Ziad Abilama and the singer Ahmed de Maschrou.

Après avoir démarré ses études d’architecture à Beyrouth, YOUSSEF TOHME – né en 1969 – poursuit sa scolarité à l’école d’architecture de Paris-Villemin, où il sort diplômé en 1998. Il entre en 2001 à l’agence de Jean Nouvel dans le cadre du projet « The Landmark » à Beyrouth, puis en 2006, où il dirige le projet du Louvre d’Abou Dhabi. Il monte ensuite son agence à Beyrouth, réalise l’université Saint-Joseph et construit ses premières villas, présentées dans cet ouvrage. En tant qu’architecte-urbaniste, il est actuellement en charge de l’aménagement de l’ancienne friche industrielle Brazza Nord à Bordeaux et assure le commissariat de la Biennale Agora 2014 à Bordeaux en septembre prochain.

Architecte de formation, KARINE DANA a été chef de rubrique pour la revue AMC durant douze ans. Elle travaille aujourd’hui comme critique d’architecture et journaliste indépendante. Elle conçoit le scénario et le contenu de la Biennale Agora 2014 à Bordeaux et réalise un film, Architectural Dreams, autour des architectures de Youssef Tohme.

L’artiste libanais ZIAD ANTAR est présent dans de nombreuses manifestations internationales depuis 2008 – à la Tate Modern, au Centre d’art contemporain de Meymac (France) en 2008 ; au Beirut Art Center, au Centre photographique d’Île-de-France, à la Triennale d’art contemporain du Palais de Tokyo à Paris. En 2010, il est lauréat du Future Generation Art Prize. La même année, il publie l’ouvrage Portrait of a Territory chez Actes Sud. En 2012, l’exposition « Expired » lui est consacrée à la galerie Almine Rech et, fin 2013, l’exposition « Safe Sounds », à La Criée de Rennes.

MARC TOUITOU, directeur artistique (Les Années Staudenmayer, Norma), a assuré la conception et le graphisme de plusieurs ouvrages de Ziad Antar. Il a notamment imaginé pour ce livre deux univers, jouant sur le choix des textures, qui répondent aux intentions des deux auteurs de l’ouvrage.
