  • From the France's commissioning in 1912 to the France's first transatlantic crossing in early 1962, French shipping companies and shipyards have enjoyed an exceptional half-century. This period saw the creation of a series of legendary ships aboard which the French decorative arts found an unparalleled setting. Ile-de-France (1927) and Normandy (1935) are two remarkable examples.

Aboard the Ocean Liners explores 50 years of decorative arts and visits fourteen great French transatlantic ships, highlighting the specific style that the greatest decorators (Arbus, Ruhlmann, Prou, Dunand, Leleu, Subes, etc.) have instilled in each of them. The richness of the iconography revives the splendor of these decorative groups which have now disappeared. This book restores to them the place that their ambition, their quality and their scale should have earned them in the French heritage of the 20th century.

Aboard the Ocean Liners offers for the first time a real work of comparative history, with a perspective on French and foreign achievements over these fifty years.
