Paris Ile de la Cité 2040

The historic center of the capital, the Île de la Cité is home to the Hôtel-Dieu, the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, the Sainte-Chapelle, the Palais de Justice and the flower market. The core of Paris, however, remains a little-known place, out of step with its status as the heart of the metropolis.

Since December 2015, Dominique Perrault, architect of the François-Mitterrand site of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the redeveloped Dufour pavilion at the Palace of Versailles, and associate of Philippe Bélaval, president of the Center des monuments nationaux, initiated a project to reimagine the Île de la Cité by 2040. How can we modernize this UNESCO-listed site, now neglected by Parisians, to bring mobility and life into it?

Based on archival documents, sketches, engravings, maps and photographs, the book highlights the different redevelopment projects imagined for the island throughout history, while questioning its current role. To reintegrate this extraordinary site into the city of tomorrow, Dominique Perrault and Philippe Bélaval have come up with thirty-five proposals that give it a central place again, in particular through the enhancement of its exceptional heritage and an overhaul of traffic between its different centers of gravity, and the exploitation of its basements and its foundations as well as the routes along its river banks.

Dominique Perrault est un architecte et urbaniste, acteur engagé de l’architecture contemporaine. Professeur à l’École Polytechnique de Lausanne, conférencier, et membre de l’Académie des Beaux Arts depuis 2015, il compte à son historique de nombreuses réalisations d’envergure qui ont fait asseoir sa légitimité internationale. Architecte de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, du Vélodrome et de la piscine olympique berlinois, de l’extension de la Cour de Justice Européenne au Luxembourg, il a récemment réhabilité le pavillon Dufour du Château de Versailles.

Philippe Bélaval est un haut fonctionnaire français, président du Centre des Monuments Nationaux depuis 2012. Titulaire d’une maitrise de droit public, diplômé de l’Institut d’Études Politiques de Toulouse, ancien élève de l’Institut des Hautes Études de Défense Nationale et Directeur Général de l’Opéra de Paris, il est membre du conseil d’État depuis 1979.
