"It's a rare species, but it exists", declares Pascal Renous, art critic, speaking of creative couples.
Two-headed creator-decorator Janine Abraham and Dirk-Jan Rol met in Jacques Dumond's workshop in 1955. The couple shared the same love of rigor, line and flat areas of color. Their first joint creations were presented in 1956 at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.
Their furniture in rattan, wood or aluminum, twice awarded at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs (a sideboard in 1956 and an armchair in 1958), is noticed by the public and professionals alike. Jean Royère did not hesitate to use their emblematic Soleil armchair (gold medal at the Brussels International Exhibition of 1958) for the decoration of the palace of the Shah of Iran, in Tehran. Authors of numerous interior designs for individuals, as well as for major brands such as Les Huchers-Minvielle, Yves Rocher and Conforama, Abraham & Rol have also expressed their great creativity through architecture, a field in which the couple has designed, from the 1960s to the 2000s, around twenty houses, mainly in Île-de-France. Returning to this totally unknown aspect of their work, this monograph, based on period documents as well as contemporary photographs, highlights the coherence and rigor of the career of these heralds of the 1950s style.
