For seven decades, Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) helped shape the world with her inventions, leaving behind a trail of images, objects, places and buildings, so many records of a work that appears now in its full extent. This first volume of her complete works offers a detailed analysis of her first years of creation, very fertile, as much in the field of design as in that of architecture or photography. Based largely on the archives kept by the artist's family in her Parisian studio, it sheds light on her sources, her environment, her years of learning at the Union Centrale des decorative arts, as well as her meeting and association with Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier, in 1928, which would give birth to emblematic furniture such as the Tilting Chaise longue (1928), and to her first home furnishings (the villa Savoye, the Villa Church, the Villa Martínez). It also introduces us to her activist commitment, which led her to travel to Moscow and then to think about vernacular architecture at the service of the people, which led in particular, in the 1930s, to the House by the Water (1934), to a holiday center (1935), and even to her first mountain architectures. The 1930s saw the creation of the UAM, of which she was one of the founding members alongside Robert Mallet-Stevens, but also her ideological break with Le Corbusier, which, on the eve of the Second World War, led her to set out on her own.

JACQUES BARSAC est réalisateur d’une quarantaine de documentaires sur l’art et sur l’histoire, dont Charlotte Perriand ou encore Le Corbusier, pour lequel il a reçu le trophée de la promotion de l’architecture du ministère de l’Équipement. Depuis 2002, il consacre son activité autour de l’œuvre de Charlotte Perriand. Auteur de quatre ouvrages de référence, Charlotte Perriand, un art d’habiter, Éditions Norma, 2005, Charlotte Perriand et le Japon, Éditions Norma, 2008, Charlotte Perriand et la Photographie, 5 Continents Éditions, 2011, il est également conseiller scientifique des expositions sur Charlotte Perriand depuis 2005. Il a ainsi assuré le commissariat de « Charlotte Perriand et la photographie », Petit Palais, Paris, 2011, et de « Charlotte Perriand et le Japon », musée d’Art moderne, Saint-Étienne, 2013.
JEAN-LOUIS COHEN est historien de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme du XXe siècle. De 1998 à 2003, il a supervisé la création de la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine. Il est l’auteur de plus de trente livres sur l’architecture et a été commissaire de nombreuses expositions au Centre Georges-Pompidou, au pavillon de l’Arsenal et à l’Institut français d’architecture.
ARTHUR RÜEGG est professeur à l'École polytechnique fédérale de Zurich, en Suisse. Spécialiste de Le Corbusier, il est notamment l’auteur de Charlotte Perriand, livre de bord, 1928-1933, Birkhauser, 2004, et de Le Corbusier. Meubles et intérieurs 1905-1965, Scheidegger & Spiess, 2012.
