Léon Krier observes that architecture is no longer a simple matter for architects. Today we are paying the price for disfigured cities, suburbs and landscapes. This book is aimed at those who are determined to no longer endure a degrading living environment. There is no inevitability in architecture. The general abdication in the face of the chaotic appearance of urban areas does not result from a backward-looking defeatism: the possible choices in terms of town planning are poorly explained, or even hidden. However, the European urban tradition is alive. It is not a question of imposing a solution but of creating a climate of tolerance and openness to discussion. Only public debate on contrasting ideas and achievements will reveal livable and desirable solutions. In this way, the course of events which would seem to leave us fated to impoverished practices and overwhelmed imaginations can be reversed. With striking drawings and in clear language, the author proposes a fundamental simplification of legislation, to find the archetypes of an art of creating cities where life is good, and which allow us to dream.
