  • In 1987, the “Cités-Cinés” exhibition at the Grande Halle de la Villette opened a new path in scenographic art using very sophisticated “toys” such as virtual images and shadow play, the 1/1 model, and sound architectures. Building an ephemeral and illusory city, François Confino, museographic architect and scenographer, immersed the spectator, equipped with an infrared helmet, in a world on the border of fiction. In settings inspired by great films inscribed in our memory and reassembled like a city, seventeen cinemas projected it into the urban visions of Griffith, Fritz Lang, Rossellini, Lubitsch, Billy Wilder, and Terry Gilliam. Subjective, sometimes arbitrary, and slightly insolent, like its author, this book defines a profession which does not really exist, but which many people practice and in which François Confino is a pioneer.
