Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet

Published on the occasion of the centenary of the Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet, classified as a Historic Monument, this work traces its architectural and theatrical history. It is an eventful history, with the monumental Éden-Théâtre, resembling a Hindu temple, created in 1883 and dismantled in 1896 to give birth to the Athénée-Comique, then the Athénée. Since 1977, its name has been associated with that of its legendary director, herald of theatrical simplicity who, paradoxically, chose in 1934 to settle in this surprising neo-baroque place. Seduced by its extraordinary machinery, Jouvet moved from the Shakespearean simplicity dear to Copeau to Italian-style theater, commissioning the legendary sets for L'École des femmes from Christian Bérard in 1936. Thus, we have seen this great Parisian scene evolve since the end of the 19^th century, through the Jouvet years, then with Mercure from 1951, Bergé, who created a room dedicated to experimental theater and the famous musical Mondays, up to Patrice Martinet in 1993, initiator of its remarkable restoration.
