Alongside Ruhlmann, Leleu, Dunand, Subes and Brandt, interior designer and decorator René Prou (1887-1947) is a central figure of the Art Deco movement. From 1919, he participated in most of the Autumn Salons and Salons of Decorative Artists before establishing himself at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts of 1925.
Appointed head of Pomone, the Bon Marché art workshop, he gave a more modern direction to its creations.
Recognized through large public or private orders, his talent as a designer is expressed in particular in the decoration of ocean liners, the layout of luxury trains such as the Orient Express, and the Mitsukoshi stores in Tokyo. At the Palace of the League of Nations in Geneva, he spoke alongside José Maria Sert with whom he also collaborated at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.
His style, defined by the curves of the metal legs, mixed with joyful ornamentation, rejuvenates and lightens the full and massive forms of Art Deco while preserving harmony, comfort and a certain idea of simple luxury.
In his workshop he brings together young decorators and artists such as Ivan Da Silva Bruhns, his daughter Geneviève Prou, Étienne-Henri Martin and Adrien Ekman, who participate in various projects.
This first monograph is the result of significant research undertaken in documentary funds and family archives that have remained unpublished.
