“Bindings-Furniture-Frames”. As his letterhead states, the multiple talents of Pierre-Émile Legrain (1888-1929) make him an atypical character, sought after by bibliophiles, Art Deco enthusiasts and collectors of exceptional furniture.
His meteoric life is a succession of decisive encounters: the illustrator Paul Iribe; the fashion designer Jacques Doucet, for whom he creates bindings and frames for his famous collection of modern art, as well as African-cubist furniture intended for his “studio” on rue Saint-James in Neuilly; the milliner Jeanne Tachard; the journalist Maurice Martin du Gard; the Noailles; the whimsical Elsie de Wolfe; Marie Bonaparte; and even the merchant César de Hauke who opened the doors to the American market for him. A founding member of the UAM, Pierre Legrain was one of the key players in the emerging modernity of the 1920s.
The first transversal monograph on this extraordinary artist, this book traces the thread of his life, analyzes the components of his unique style, and highlights the formal links between his work as a designer, bookbinder and designer. Through an entourage of his friends and sponsors, it presents the artistic and literary context in which this unique work was able to blossom.
