Exhibition from April 12 to August 25, 2013 at the Troyes Museum of Modern Art / Pierre and Denise Lévy national collections
Martine Lévy was born on April 22, 1932 in Troyes. The daughter of great art lovers, Pierre and Denise Lévy, she grew up in a house open to artists, where each section of every wall was decorated with works.
Evolving in this artistic excitement, Martine Lévy learned to draw, following the advice of painters Maurice Marinot and André Derain. At the age of 17, she decided to devote herself to painting and settled in Paris to perfect her skills at the Académie Julian and at La Grande-Chaumière.
At 22 years old, she married Léon Cligman, an art enthusiast and collector. That same year, Martine became a double-first-name artist. The origin of this mysterious signature, Martine Martine, dates back to her first radio interview. Intimidated by the situation, she repeated her first name twice when the journalist asked her name. In reaction to this response, the journalist exclaimed: "So it’s Martine Martine."
